We left Rothenburg early the next morning to drive the 7 hours to Brugge in Belgium. Hmm sounded like a good idea at the time.
It was great fun travelling on the autobahn. Michael was doing 140 in the middle lane and we were being overtaken by BMWs, Audi's, etc etc doing at least 180 or 200. It was quite a bit of fun (certainly Michael wished he had his BMW instead of the Fiat 500 that we had been given by Avis).
We finally arrived at Brugge and found out hotel. Lovely on the canal. The girl wasn't the most friendly of people and she directed us to drive to the parking area (underground) where we could park the car for the duration of our stay. Brugge is much better seen on foot.
Well because of road works the road she advised us to turn down was blocked. Now Brugge is made up of lots of little cobblestone streets with all one ways and I mean ALL one ways. We finally found ourselves somewhere near the Market Square and after frustration just parked the car in the street bought a ticket and went to get BEER (tick one). Once the streets had quietened down we drove to the carparking area with complete disregard for the one way signs and actually drove right through the middle of the market square even though it is for pedestrians only (we were very careful not to hurt anyone I can assure you but you wouldn't believe how stressful it can be when you can't read any signs for the life of you).
We had a lovely meal that night complete with the best Belgium Waffles (tick) that I have ever tasted.
We had a great night out and met up with some students who were in their university band and they were playing heaps of songs and we had a great time.
Next morning we did a canal boat trip. We climbed the Belfy Tower (all 366 steps) and were at the top when the bells started ringing for 10am (and had to hold our ears for all 10 gongs on the biggest bell of all- ouch).
We then walked back and bought some locally made chocolate before heading off to Amsterdam.
